It is no doubt that first responders can have some stinky gear, uniforms, vests and boots. But goodness, the summer heat brings on a new level of stink that can be hard to beat!
And the last thing you want is to bring those smells into your car or home. Or worse, never get the smell out and wear the same stinky vest and uniform day after day.
Here are some tried and true ways to keep all vests, gear, uniforms and more smelling fresh and clean year round (especially during those hot months):

Create a barrier between the body and gear/vests/uniform.
The number one reason vests, gear, and uniforms get stinky during the summer heat is because of sweat. So if you create a barrier between the body and the gear, uniform or vests, then the body odor and sweat will have less of an odor.
My husband usually wears moisture wicking shirts under his bulletproof vest and uniform for this reason. He also wears breathable socks in his boots to help with sweat.
Quick tip: slide an ankle sock on top of the insert of your boot/shoe as an extra barrier. It not only makes the shoe more comfortable but reduces the transfer of sweat.
Use Arrest My Vest to eliminate odors.
We use Arrest My Vest spray religiously in our home! This odor eliminating spray takes out the toughest of smells and when I say it takes them out, I mean it! It does not mask them or cover them up. It is specifically formulated for first responders and military gear but I have a secret…we use it on everything! The dog bed, the kid’s shoes, my car, gym bags, my kid’s sport gear, and so much more!!

Our favorite scents are Midnight and Unscented. We use the spray on things that can’t be washed right away like my husband’s bulletproof vest or items that are hard to wash (like the inside of my husband’s patrol car). And boom, smells are gone almost instantly and it becomes easy to beat that summer heat!
For things that can be washed, we LOVE the Laundry Booster by Arrest My Vest. You simply throw your laundry in the wash with detergent as normal. Then add 1/4 cup of the laundry booster (again we love the midnight and unscented scents) with the laundry and detergent and wash as normal. It’s that easy! We use this for my husband’s socks (you know, the long black ones that cops always wear), his uniform, workout clothes, towels, sport uniforms and much more!
I left a towel from the beach in my car a bit too long and the laundry booster had it smelling fresh and new with one load.

Arrest My Vest always has amazing sales during the summer (it’s like Christmas in July). Right now they have a Buy 3 Get 3 FREE sale which you can check out here.
Or you can use my code THANKYOU (all one word) to get 15% off your order.
Hang dry all gear, uniforms and vests
Make sure to hang dry or lay all uniforms, gear and vests after each use so they can breathe properly.
Quick tip: you should always follow manufacturer recommendations for hanging bulletproof vests (some say to lay flat).
If they are crumbled on your laundry room floor or laying in your locker at work, then they are definitely going to stink worse. So take the extra few minutes to wash them or spray with arrest my vest then dry them out.
